I remember the guard was getting beaten up because he tried to enforce the curfew once. I tried to intervene and save him although I was late also. He however got all arrogant with me also so I let him have it also. No guard stopped any NIE hostel inmate after that.

Recollections

When I joined NIE, My family and relatives were very scared that I will never graduate, as I was very unpopular student and my unfriendly relationship with professors. Joining Industrial & Production literally scared me due to the history of our HOD being very unfriendly.

I enjoyed my four years of engineering life. I kept to myself, doing what is exactly need for me sail smoothly. One thing I used to very consistent is going late to class. Somtimes the lecturer used to be so pissed at me, he used to say "you are too early for the next class" Since classes start at 7:30, and I used to drive from Yadavagiri which is 7 miles away from the college, I excepted some time allowances. But I hated when lecturer comes at 7:45 and he did not allow me when I came at 7:50 To make it short, I was popularly known as late comer.

My life was mainly playing cricket, studying the previous day for exams. Life in NIE was very good. I was popularly known as Anupi or people who know me closely used to called me Gowda.

Although I came to US for my Graduate studies as soon as I finished my Bachelor's. We are only batch which keeps in touch with each other. every of my classmate is well settled working for Multi National companies and few of us are in US. When ever I visit India, I make it a point to have get together with my old buddies. I do meet my faculty(now I am not scared at all, they are good friends to me).

Right now I work as a software Engineer in Silicon Valley, CA. I would be very happy to meet my old folks or people from NIE. Do send me Email at axprasad@hotmail.com. Thanks --Anand Prasad

I owe Mr. Srikanta money for two plates of Idlis! My contention for not paying up was that the idlis were horrible ( nothing new ! ) and his contention is that he still gave me idlis!

NIE canteen, I spent some of the beautiful moments of my life over there playing carrom, chatting and cursing srikanta for giving less tea (by two). I wish management thinks some good about the students and try to give some good food for a reasonable cost. The partial attitude of srikanta, special tea's for faculty and ever increasing prices of the food items these are some of the bad recollections. Otherwise the canteen is really huge and wonderful.

Recollections

I was 1996 graduate from NIE, Computer Science Dept. Like everyone I was also complaining about every thing there. Its only after getting out of that place does one realize the importance of NIE. I really miss my days at NIE. The relaxed attitude of the faculty in way helped me in under standing the stuff better. In short those were the greatest days of my life.

that canteen is unforgettable...but my memories revolve more around cholera bhavan, dutch point (any one remember that place? it was down the road, near the turn-off to Sterling theater...man, loved it, loved it, loved it...specially sneaking off for some holy smoke after techniks....

i am from the class of '90...the strike think tank that you speak about - i guess it was the class of 86 that started it all. If you guys remember Chakravarty (Chakku!) - my favourite recollection is - early morning, outside the main gate, chakku steps in, still brushing his teeth and speaking in that cackle of his - college's closed today..we are on strike! guess what, everyone turned around - i mean, instantly - and then settled down in Cholera Bhavan for cigarettes, chai....u know the rest! Loved the place, man!

Recollections

It was indeed nostalgic when I visited this site and read about ol' Srikanta... his kesari bath and soggy poories were something we looked forward to ( believe it or not) In fact, because the recreation room ( read TT table and TV ) was part of the canteen atmosphere, the canteen used to look more popular than it actually was... I remember the time when I walked out of an exam half done because the Olympics was on (long time ago 1987-88 ??)and an all important hockey match was being played, India being one of the teams.. I could not bear the cheers coming from the canteen after every few minutes... BTW, I did pass that exam.. Three cheers to the NIE canteen.

4 years in that place!!! I can now even survive in Mars...In fact it was a place filled with Martians. The place where the generals used to aggregate for war strategizing(strikes), where words like table ettiquete and gourmet never existed, where the intellectually "high" got together in "spiritual" union. Exam time was the most energised period...Seenu's and Kukku's tea stall, TV room, terrace....rendezvous points for the weary at mind. By far, THE BEST PART OF MY LIFE AT....NIE BOY'S HOSTEL!!

Recollections

Five years (we it seems needed more education) of engineering is a lot of time to spend in a place. Recollections from such times have a beautiful mix of good and bad. Srikanta "We have sworn by his name at every breakfast and occasional lunch and an infinite supply of x/y coffees (where x is always smaller than y.) I can still with relish remember the smell of hot oil and those Maddur Vadas. Ever so often, BJS would have to remind me that he would be taking class, which as often I missed to either play TT or just not attend class. Srikanta time was the bright spot in every day of the 5 long years of learning

How could I forget the tea and coffee of ridiculous proportions 5/8, 7/9........Only Srikanta could serve it in such proportions. More than anything I remember the zoo block wing of the mens hostel which was located next to Srikantas kitchen. I remember we used to be awake well past midnight just to eat Srikantas hot maddur vadais. If I could have those times back, I would not trade it for anything in the world. Long Live Srikanta!

What I remember most about NIE was the absolute comraderie and brotherhood we had. Class tests where always a team-effort where 3 of us used to study the 3 topics and then cheat ;>) The chai shop was the heaven where we drank countless "by 2" chais..and wasted so much of our youth :)

Recollections

In those days when I was studying at N.I.E., we used to have a ritual almost every night after dinner. It used to be called the 'Banana Walk'. We used to walk down the short distance from the hostel to the nearby 'circle' near the Silk Industries factory to have a 9 inch long banana. Were they gorgeous !! Of course there were also the guys who used to pick up cigarettes and bidis(at month ends). We had once gone "triples" on the bicycle from the Hostel to the nearby movie theatre( I forget the name now) where English movies were regularly featured. Enroute to the theatre there was a Police Station ( I don't know if it is still there). We got caught by the cops for riding 'triples'. The inspector in charge did give us a few words of wisdom which went like this . Quote " You are engineering students who are the future of the country. If you do not show any respect for the law, then who will ?" Unquote. We never rode 'triples' on the bicycle after that.

There were the days when we had a feast or special lunch or dinner on ocassions. At times one of us could not attend the lunch or dinner. Such guys used to tell the cook in charge " Give my sweet to Deshpande or give an extra Chapati from my side to Jaggi". Will we ever remember those days !!! The values of life have changed ever since.

Remembering of the college, I feel "The days of Golden Era is gone for ever"....I can no longer bunk my classes and go to movies or chat at the chai shop, nor go to class with new stories for being late. Boy......the masti of student life at NIE is gone for ever. But it's goanna last in memoriez for years to come all the masti I had with my friendz....... Remembering of IP, I still fear BJR's "Gas Chamber ". Man..... he was a terror. Subbaiah was cool.....and the rest were ok. I still cherish the masti we had in the class and all credit goes for girls not being in the class. Talking of Cricket, man........our batch won all the tounaments (either honestly or by cheating). Finally........it was really nice to spend 4 years of my life at NIE. nrampura@hotmail.com

It was always a pleasure fighting with JCE students about which school was better. They used to call N.I.E as nayi(dog) college, and we used to call them kudra(college). The reason being, JCE campus had lot of stray horses.

Canteen foods were horrible and the account systems stinked. When I went back to visit the school after two years, that manager told me that I owe 30 bucks or something like that. I swear that everything was settled before I left the school:)

Yeah; even in 1985, we barely touched the computer - some had access through different skills, though. I am sure that the college would be doing well to compete with JCE - there is always that tendency to compare - old studetnts would be full of storeys about how the other college is better.....

My regards to all the teachers - most of whom are still there at ECE.

I think the information on the web page should be more detailed (so that we can boast of our old college with our colleagues far away from home).

And finally: I think Shrikanta did an excellent job .... who can forget the `bytoo tea', 3/4 `baadaami haalu', etc.?! And JP had once asked him: ``yen Shreekanta, ishtu bele; swalpa kadime maadiko'' and all that Shreekanta did was smile (and all of us including JP knew that is the best we could hope for...).

The canteen would surely be associated with two or i should say three important things - "srikanta" for the occasional bisi bele bath which used to be good - i can recollect having relished once or twice in 4 years ( hope inflation hasn't gotten to srikanta and his bele bath by now ), secondly - the carrom & its crowd there ,which was fun especially if you were late or early for the next session ( coffee / tea with carrom is a good media to know other folks from different branches )-i would have spent most of the time at the start of the sem or at the end out there or at the "chai" shop with the "great crowd". Third factor most importantly the TOILET in the canteen - was by far the most clean toilet on the campus ( i hope they do have more of the clean ones around in the campus now !).. Of course there was one more attraction a 19" color tv with doordarshan beaming UGC prog's and students in front of it only during one day matches ! If you needed to know the latest happenings and intersting stuff happening around the campus you would have surely headed to the canteen to listen to folks talk politics (local nie to national ), sports , bangalore , gossip, and finally exam dates .

Recollections: Sure they have not changed from your time. The computers are not up to the mark. Microprocessors are still malfunctioning. LCD display goes boom from time to time. Interested students not given encouragement. I remember one incident where a student asked a question about the way to calculate the internal impedence of a circuit.Failing to comprehend the question the Asst. Professor sent the student and a few more out of the class. This is NIE...........
from a student (batch 96)
EDITORIAL NOTE: This reminds me of the apathy all of us had to deal with. At the risk of sounding condescending, part of what NIE teaches you is the steely determination to succeed 'inspite' of the enormous odds against you including an intellectual and social dysfunction between the teachers and the taught. This may be one of the bad recollections but it needs to be here.

Recollections: Total fun time, everybody was so happy about everything. That was a place where we were all so goddamn casual and seemed like all of us were free from everything going on outside the hostel, nothing seemed to eventouch us. The best part was the generation of money at any time, it wassomething like a 24hour ATM banking centre. All of us used to get our spirits high and would be forced to just crash out the whole damn Sunday afterhaving the special Sunday breakfast- "Masala Dosa". Never figured out whatthese guys added in the 'maavu'. We had a ball. Thinking back, the thing which really sticks out is the fact that all of us had our freedom, most of us never bothered to do anything worthwhile, but again depends on what one's idea of worthwhile is i guess.

On a wider perspective, one might want to more information about the projects that a department/student groupmight be conducting. That way, other companies might be more interested in the particular department and the work that it is doing. But for starters .. this is great work..keep it up.! :)Preeta

This feeling is shared by a majority of the Ex-NIEites.
