There was lots of failures including some who were expecting ranks. Some eminent people (including Prof.Dhananjaya,ex-principal SJCE) took the initiative to draw the attention of controller of examinations and the VC. Some papers picked up at random were re-valued by another person. Based on the outcome of the second valuation, moderation of marks was announced by the university. Most of the failed candidates were passed and those expecting ranks were successful. Surprising though that BJS was not debarred from examination work. No sooner he turned around to give a demonstration on th figure he Black Board fell down and was broken to pieces. He had a narrow escape at that time. He exclaimed " this is what happens if you teach IRRIGATION and draw heavy figures". Name: Vinay Kumar TS RecollectionsThose wonderful 4 years in Mysore... yes, as my classmate Srinivas Bhat Kodavur says, it was the most dangerous Department to study, particularly if you saw Dr. BJR (a living dynamite) moving somewhere near you. Incase, he happened to see you or asked you some question, we thought, we would be doomed! That was the situation! Mechanical Engg. guys never even dared to come across Dr. BJR... I remember a guy who was a rank holder in all the semesters and was failed in Metrology Lab just because, he could not take a proper reading on one of the instruments when Dr. BJR was the examiner (because, he was wearing glasses). You can make the guess now... that guy failed !! Dr. BJR tried to give some explanations for that in our DCT (Design of Cutting Tools) class telling that he never intentionally failed him... just that nobody could believe it. I also remember a famous quip of Dr. BJR - "If somebody thinks that he knows everything in his subject, he is a big fool!!!" - I do not exactly remember whom he referred... my guess is, it must be either TRS or SS of Mech. Dept. Guess, I am writing a biography of Dr. BJR... no... I am writing whatever comes to my mind. Last but not the least, Ratna Theatre where we used to spend our nights with II shows... my friend Srinivas Bhat would vouch for it. All together, it was a memorable 4 years in Mysore!! wish, I could get it back today!!! Name: GV Rajasekhar RecollectionsThe 'Grand-NIE Strike - 1993'. I guess that this was THE strike NIE ever saw.I was in my 2nd semester then.. The fight was for a very simplistic requirement - Restrooms (aka toilets) in the campus !!! We had the illustrious group of Radha Ramanan, Ravi, Prakash, Amaresh, Maccha, Mahesh(IP) and scores of others spearheading this cause... Those were the days that marked the 'building' of the toilets and new amenities within the campus. Then there was terror in the hostel, in the third month, Ashokpuram 'dada' had barged into the hostel and hit 3 students -I recollect the name of only two, Ravikumar Raju and Suman Prasad.. i just happended to have caught glimpse of this guy when he was making his exit... God, I have chill down my spine as i write this. Well, those were the days when we had our 8th semmers - probably one of the best that institute had ever seen. I was there in 2000 May, the hostel looks so different, there is a lawn and concrete covering all the place from the entrance thru to the vehicle parking lot.. cement benches to sit on .. the dining hall is expanded .. but the people are still the same. Attending classes used to mean solving Deccan's CORSSWORD(Savera used to bring her seperate Sheet of crossword, since she hardly leaves any block empty within 15 minutes of 1 HOUR class), drinking pepsi/Coke in Guest lecturer's class(i forgot his name). V also played a Snow game in Class(savera's idea). Andy's best efforts to please lecturers finally made him the "OUTSTANDING student of the IP Branch". How can i forget the Vinte's excuse of coming late into class as being "closed Railway Gate". Those treacherous Vardu's FM classes, his classic drawings and observations from diff angles. Those vain efforts in trying to score perfect 15. Every memory of NIE days brings a unique,special feeling. Parameswaran RecollectionsI have fond memories of my years at NIE from 1958-62. In those days we had only one small one story building I was TR Seetha Ramu's (principal NIE)classmate. We were the first batch of Mechanical Engineering students. We had very few teachers and we had to go to UCE Bangalore to do our laboratory work. The teachers though were fantastic. We had a great rapport with them. They used to take lot of interest in students. I still remember the hydraulic machinery, thermodynamics, gas turbines etc taught at NIE. The machine shop was pretty interesting. Using the four jaw chuck was a nightmare. We could not center the work piece no matter how hard we tried. Apprameya, Narasimha Murthy, SP Ram were great. Talking of SP Ram he worked out over 500 poblems on belt design T1/T2 = e(Mu Theta). We used to wonder when the belt design would end. I graduated from NIE in 1962, studied at IISC 1962-64, moved to US in 1967 where I have been living since. I like to know where are my classmates now and what they are doing.
