The member asked my father to go to his house on a certain date and time to discuss and finalise my admission. When my father went to his (members’) house the formalities were done. At the end my father (about to leave the members’ house) thanked him for his help. The members’ reaction was “What is the use of empty thanks”. I too was an alumnus, that was in late 50s and early 60s, and was also a lecturer for a length of time stradling 60s and 70s. The best job I think I ever did in those periods is to be involved in training some of the best brains in education and enterprise in India today. I later moved to the western world to continue my career. I was lucky to have trained a number of talented youngsters here too. I would say to all students old, new or whatever, is that student life is short and use it effectively and responsibly. There were people like R.Ramaswamy - who taught us Applied Mechanics and who was famous for calling each student by his name on the first day of his class. Our math professor was K.
